J-Swagg
DaMar Jackson a.k.a J-Swagg. born on March 18, 1989 and raised in the
Maryland metropolitan area of Prince George’s and Charles County areas.
According to his mother, Sonja Jackson Simpkins and close family and
friends, DaMar started singing at an early age. He would sing when he
thought no one was listening. His favorite was Whitney Houston’s
soundtrack from the bodyguard (I will always love you) and many gospel
songs from the movie, The Preachers Wife that Whitney Houston played in
also. He also liked watching and singing along with the Broadway show
“Cats”. When DaMar spent time over his maternal Grandparents house he
would sing along with his cousin Antoine, who played the drums. At the age
of 10, DaMar was inspired by his maternal Great Grandmother to join the
children’s choir at Zion Hill Baptist Church in Victoria, Virginia when he
went down for summer breaks. At the age of 12, DaMar was given his first
chance to showcase his voice, by singing “This Little Light of Mine” at his
6th grade Graduation at Francis Scott Key Elementary School. DaMar started
writing his own songs at the age of 13. His first song was titled ”My
First Love”. By this time DaMar’s mother realized that he had talent and
after seeing that he could really sing and write music, decided to get him
a keyboard to see if he could compose the beats to his own songs that he
was writing and to her surprise, within no time, no classes, no one
teaching him, DaMar learned to play the keyboard on his own and begin to
make the beats to the songs as he wrote them. Throughout DaMar’s middle
and high school years, he has been in the school choir, which is continuing
now thru his college year at Morgan State University. DaMar has
participated in a lot of talent show in where he has come in 1st, 2nd and 3
rd place. In DaMar’s Tenth grade year at Westlake High School, he entered
his first competition (The Westlake Idol). Singing “My, My, My” by Johnny
Gill, “Whenever, Wherever, Whatever” by Maxwell, and a song he composed
"Let it Rain", taking the competition in first place. Winning that
competition inspired DaMar even more to pursue his love for music. In the
summer of 2006, DaMar had a chance to go and audition for Season six of
American Idol in Rutherford, New Jersey, but did not make it because he was
not what they were looking for, but he still kept his head up. During his
high school year, DaMar has also participated in two plays at his school,
“Aida” and Fiddler on the roof, both of which he had solo parts in. DaMar
is now attending his second year at Morgan State University going for his
Bachelor’s Degree in Music, furthering his knowledge in music from vocal on
up to the business of it. While doing this he also continues to write and
perform at various talent shows and events. DaMar's music is something
everyone can listen to. He is interested in genres such as Hip-Hop, Pop,
Soul, Jazz, R&B, and rock. Inspired by many artist such as Whitney
Houston, Luther Vandross, Donny Hathaway, Marvin Gaye, Prince, Michael
Jackson, Janet Jackson, Jamie Foxx, Usher, Sam Cooke and many more. He
hopes to inspire artist and people around the world. His music expresses
who he is and what he loves. With the help of his uncle Silvester Stokes,
and father Ridgley Makins, he will continue to pursue his career in music.
DaMar has started on a Demo Project Titled "Galaxy Lover", in which he
produced and wrote. So stay tuned with this new and up coming artist
because he has a lot more to offer in years to come. God Bless AND THANK YOU.
