The Lady…Crowned “Little Ella” by the great Curtis Fuller, Award winning vocalist, composer, and lyricist Mavis ‘SWAN’ Poole releases her highly anticipated Debut album “ Soul Tree”. After 18 months of working with incomparable producer/drummer Jeremy ‘BEAN’ Clemons, and countless sultry nights of teasing and seducing crowds with snippets from her upcoming album, SWAN releases her first masterpiece, “Soul Tree”, into the universe. The Sound…Swan displays her versatility as a musician by working amongst the greats in jazz, gospel, and hip-hop. Honored as “Indy’s 2007 Jazz Vocalist to watch” and having already recorded with Grammy Award winning producer 9th Wonder and Hip Hop guru Buckshot, ‘SWAN’ is stirring up the music scene as we know it. She possesses an unrivaled brilliance of shattering barriers with her rich and smoky sound, undauntingly amalgamating jazz, R&B, soul, funk and hip-hop. Swan is a sassy, soulful, fiery Songbird (the literal translation of MAVIS) whose music promises to weather the test of time.
HER story…“Bull City’s” finest was born and raised in Durham, North Carolina, where she attended the very prestigious North Carolina Central University. Recording artist Lenora Zenzalai Helm, and jazz icons Ira Wiggins and Arnold George were just a few of her most impacting mentors as an undergraduate student. From there, she went on to work and/or record with such greats as Kurt Elling, Dee Daniels, Dr. Billy Taylor, Shirley Caesar, Nancy King, Joey Calderazzo, Carmen Lundy, Branford Marsalis, George Cables, and a host of other trendsetting musicians that helped her solidify her sound and style. Unsettled with a BA in Music Ed. and a BM is Jazz Vocal Studies, Swan is presently completing her MA at Queens College, where she studies with Antonio Hart, David Berkman, Howard Brofsky, Michael Mossman, and Miles Griffith.
The Band...Swan co-leads the band ‘Soul Understated’ with the producer/drummer, Jeremy ‘BEAN’ Clemons. Soul Understated was a dream for Jeremy, who asked Swan to help him birth this unrivaled squad of superior musicians. Clemons is a force to be reckoned with as a musician and producer. As the producer of “Soul Tree”, Clemons displays his innovative approach to Swan’s unparalleled ideas and lyrics. Within the band, Swan and Bean share the stage with some of New York’s finest musicians including Joshua David, Kevin Louis, Brian Jackson, Ben Tyree, Lakecia Benjamin, Stacy Dillard, David Bryant, Ameen Saleem, and many more.
The Album… “Soul-Tree” (sultry), although long anticipated, vows to be a fulfilling musical journey into her life, mind, music and soul. This project is dedicated to the loving memory of her niece, Jamiyah Denise Poole.
