Biography
Charmaine Cortis is a lyric Soprano from Malta. She recently moved to NJ USA where she united in marriage with Manuel Fidlago.
Ms. Cortis completed her course of studies at the State Musical Academy in Sofia, Bulgaria, namely "Pancho Vladigerov" under the tuition of Prof. Blagovesta Karnobatlova Dobreva, graduating with Honours.
Charmaine has made various successful appearances on the concert platform during recitals accompanied on the piano and /or orchestra/string quartet. Some of these performances were staged by highly established organizations in Malta, as well as overseas, which include sacred and secular concerts given in the UK, Germany, Austria, Hungary, Switzerland , Belgium, Italy and Bulgaria.
Her singing credits include the concerts at the President's Palace, a number of sacred concerts to the accompaniment of the prestigious church organ at St. John's Co -Cathedral in the Maltese capital city, Valletta, as well as Gala performances, Mozart's requiem, Mozart’s Grand Mass in C minor, Mozart’s Mass in D , all held at the Manoel National Theatre and more recently Mgr. Benigno Zerafa's Mass in D , a major work for SATB soloists and 8part chorus and orchestra, held at Mdina Cathedral (Malta's ancient city)
Charmaine had a first taste of stage production when in 1995 she understudied Maltese soprano Lydia Caruana in the leading role of Josephine in Sullivan's HMS Pinafore. During that same year she successfully participated in "Melita Rossiya" a Russian lyrical singers’ competition on a National basis, in which she placed a first runner up in the overall classification.
A variety of musical works, be it Classical or Baroque Sacred Music, such as Cantata , oratorio and mass, as well as Viennese Operetta, French Lyric opera, Italian Bel Canto and Verism, German ,Russian and Czech Opera all form part of her wide and versatile singing repertoire. Yet Charmaine feels equally at home with contemporary music. Being a devoted recitalist Charmaine’s talents embrace everything from Romantic Lieder, complex works by Spanish , Russian, French, Czech , Welsh, Maltese and Bulgarian composers to the gentler melodies of ballads and musicals.
