Minister Jerome "City" Smith
"Peering into the future, embracing the past and incorporating the present makes God's music that will last" – Minister Jerome C. Smith.
Born the eldest of three boys, living in an environment with an abusive father; God gave the young Jerome music as a source of solace and hope that better days were yet to come.
Minister City emerged as a singer/songwriter, producer, multi-instrumentalist and electrifying performer. One night while performing with a major R&B star, the Lord beckoned to Jerome and said, "Make music that speaks to those who otherwise might not be spoken to." And oddly enough, "no one was within twenty feet of me". Since that blessed encounter, Minister Smith has created a sound that incorporates various types of music to further connect God's people to God's Word.
Jerome believes there are only two types of music, good and bad. Due to his eclectic background, he has worked alongside such diverse artists as Dorothy Norwood (“Shake The Devil Off”), Mary J. Blige, Martha Wash, Lynette Hawkins, Jeffrey Osborne, Tito Punete, Peabo Bryson and Noel Pointer just to name a few.
His songs emphasize having faith and telling the real truth; while providing the listener with an inspirational lift. Jerome is a 'true professional' in every sense of the word," said Darlene Davis, publisher of the Clinker Periodical. "His music savvy, versatility, work ethic, spirituality and integrity are some of the reasons he is held in high esteem by those he's worked with."
Minister City debuted “For 1,000 Years” at his own Gospel & Arts Program at the Public Library in Roosevelt, NY. He received a certificate of recognition from Council Woman Dorothy Goosby and a Citation from Mayor Garner of Hempstead, N.Y.
His songs aired on the Gospel Radio Stations WTHE and WNYG of Long Island, N.Y. He performed at “The 2006 Summer Concert Series”, at the “Oasis In The Park Summer Jam II Concert”, and at an Aids Awareness Concert, located in the New York area. “The audience was captivated by his music, theatrical performance, dance moves, vocals, style and grace. Jerome’s impromptu solo on the timbalitos and the vigor displayed; had every little child and a plethora of adults playing air drums along with him.”
Minister City was recently featured on Suffolk Public Access’ “The Gospel Music Show”, hosted by Jim Van Nostrand. Minister City performed and featured other artists & evangelists currently under the “Pretty City” music ministry umbrella. “Pretty City”, stands for ‘using God’s imbued music and lyrics to make the
City a
Prettier place. Selah. Due to the overwhelming response of the viewers, the show ran for 8 weeks instead of the original 2 week time frame.
Minister Jerome also hosted his own television show, “The Bro Jerome City Smith Power Hour”. In each show he delivered a power full message of encouragement from GOD and performed one of his songs at the end of every taping. The show aired every Thursday on Long Island’s Cablevision Channel 20 at 2:00 P.M.
Jerome's talents extend beyond the music arena. He portrayed his idol, Sam Cooke in the Broadway hit musical, "The Buddy Holly Story" on Broadway. He then had a recurring role on the N.B.C. daytime soap opera "Another World" portraying the character "Hoff'.
Minister City does not promote the religious rules preached in many churches today, especially those rules that are devoid of God’s Laws. Minister City leaves his listeners feeling good about their walk with GOD because he delivers a message of spirituality and having a personal relationship with God. So many of God’s people are hurting today and through the music, God’s message can be extended to encourage His flock.
Minister Jerome desires to have longevity in the music industry and thanks God for his many talents and blessings. He prays that his music hits the spiritual mark that God intends.
