For head to feet
Experiencing Kupfer29 live is a little like attending physics class. Expecting dry science you’re awed by the demonstrations between electronics and live instruments: amazing percussion breaks, spherical sounds and the most exquisite jazz improvisations.
The musicians are professionals and either involved in innovative jazz project or classical ensembles. That is – so-to-speak – their weekday work. Kupfer29 is their saturday night. Though their sound is extremely precise and amazingly complex the groove stirs up your legs immediately. With a drone the bass discharges its load and you're uncertain: is this drum’n’bass in high end quality or some kind of danceable limbo experience? The sound tastes electrical. At the same time improvised with finest acoustics. As if you were sitting in a faraday cage you register the finest subtleties.
The voice seems magnetic. jazz singing, sometimes classical, sometimes experimental, sometimes talking-singing-sounding.
The two percussionists sustain the beat with drums and conventional percussion, but in between tap different sources of sound such as circular saws, car springs, water pistols or cleaning brushes.
The man who is keeping time is doing piecework on the piano and keyboards. Accompanied by a programmer, who turns sounds into images and transforms everything into a flowing atmosphere.
Though the phenomenon Kupfer29 might be physically explicable, after the concert it seems to have been an encounter of the third kind. Actually, a beautiful way to enjoy music.
