Biography
Shaun Correia is a Singer/Songwriter from Port Elizabeth. He has been interested in singing and music since the age of seven. During his schooling career he was part of a small choir.
In 1989 he attended voice training classes. His voice coach at the time (Mandy Gurr) invited Shaun to sing at all the local Red Nose Day (Child Welfare) functions, as well as the summer opening of the Kings Beach Super Tube.
Correia performed at the PE Opera House in the early 90’s when he partook in the annual On the Go show where he made it to the semi finals.
From there on he continued writing and recording his own material and submitting it to record companies and radio stations around the country. Correia’s first encounter with live radio came about when he was interviewed by Martin Bester (now with Radio Jacaranda & Kyknet TV) on Algoa FM in the early nineties. Martin played a demo by Shaun Correia called “Tonight” on air. Since then his song “Stuck Between” has twice been featured on Algoa FM’s demo bag which was presented by Buli G at the time 2006. More recently “Stuck Between” has also been featured on the Morning Glory Show hosted by Daron Man on Algoa FM’ 2008. His music has been featured on Algoa FM, Radio King Fisher, CBFM (now Bay FM) as well as most of the retail stores countrywide.
In 1993 Shaun ventured into theatre where he landed a part as a backing singer in the “Gilbert & Sullivan Society’s” stage production of the musical Grease held at the PE Opera House.
Correia then moved forward by forming a three piece band named Mirrors. The band played a gig at the PE diner Cadillac Jacks, as well as at PE Brookes Pavilion where they participated in a competition called The Battle of the Bands in the mid 90’s. Mirrors also made a performance at the annual PE Splash festival. Unfortunately the band was short lived and Correia decided to move on.
Shaun then joined a group of artists called the Micah group. The group consisted of a cluster of talents such as; dancers, comedians and singers etc. The Micah group toured around the Eastern Cape performing at function, old age homes and churches etc.
Shaun considers the 1998 Gospel gig as a highlight in his career. He was approached and asked to perform 5 nights consecutively at the PE Happy Valley. The show ran for 5 evenings consecutively leading up to the New Years countdown. The show consisted of solo artists and bands. Correia at the time not realizing he was actually participating in a competition was overwhelmed when he realized at the end of the show that he had won the overall gold prize. He won an award; 2 hours free studio time, a book voucher as well as a voucher from Ultimate Stylists. As he says in retrospect “the truth is stranger than fiction”.
In 1999 Shaun was approached by local producer Billy Paulson who came up with the idea to record a gospel album named “4 His Glory”. The idea was that it would consist of 4 artists whom each would contribute 4 original songs. The launch of the 4 His Glory project took place at the PE Opera House with large media coverage. Shaun’s self penned song namely “Choose to Forgive” was considered the hit from the album and also most played on Christian radio across the country. The album was recorded on Bilson Records and recorded along side with three other local artists namely; Clive Cornell, Judith Dicker, & Michael D’ Offay. The album is also available on the internet.
Further steps were taken to market the 4 His Glory project by making TV appearances on the Trinity Broadcast channel in East London. The show created a platform for Correia to perform three of the songs from the album on live television. The show also included a short interview.
Early 2003 Shaun started to feel trapped by people who labeled him as a singer who only fits into one category of music. This was very frustrating to Correia due to the fact that he had always seen himself as an expressive and versatile artist. Thus it prompted him to write his song named Rastaman. The song was written as a “break in the weather”. Correia decided to have the song recorded. He continued working on Rastaman by filming an amateur video which accompanied the song. He submitted the video to the television game show Bambonani who took an interest in local talent at the time. Months later a snippet of the video was screened on television and Shaun received a R1, 000 cheque from the television network.
Late 2005 Shaun performed at the Cell C Amphie Theatre at the PE Boardwalk in aid of a fund raising event for underprivileged children.
In 2006 Shaun performed at the KKNK (Klein Karoo Nationale Kunstefees). He filled a 30-minute time slot wherein he performed 7 songs. His repertoire consisted of original material as well as cover material. Correia felt that his performance was received in a lukewarm manner due him being the only performer who had sung in the English language and possibly landed a spot at the wrong stage.
Correia also performed at the Tsitsikamma Game Lodge when he performed at the 2006 On the Go show where he performed one of his own songs namely "Into the Light" and the well known 80’s classic "Ballad of Lucy Jordan". The show was recorded and is available on DVD.
Correia is also a well-known figure under the Karaoke nightlife scene, where he often makes appearances at the Super Sport Café (Boardwalk).
