Description:
I see this music as a composition generated by my lessons and my spirits during this fall term. Musically, rhythm and the interaction between Oboe and ensemble are foreground. The title “, A Bubble or a Shadow,” was not the controlling idea or the object depicted by the composer, but was given after I completed the piece. Whether this composition or the title would be a consequence or an anticipation, the music will reveal its meaning in its own way Yi-Ting Chen, violin Anna Pelczer, viola Peter Rosenfeld, bass Justin Berrie, flute James Smith, oboe Claire Happel, harp Becky Lu, piano Svetoslav Stoyanov, percussion Darrell Ang, conductor Premiered in the New Music New Haven series, at Sprague Hall, School of Music, Yale University. http://www.yale.edu/music/concerts/News/06.12.21.html

Description:
Belonged to the family of chordophones, Zheng (also named Guzheng) is a plucked, half-tube zither with movable bridges and 21 strings tuned to a pentatonic scale giving four octaves. The original Cat’s Rump I was a commission for solo Zheng by Yi-Jie Lai in 2003. Except the conventional performing manner, the composition adapts singspiel, microtone scale, graphic notation and visual elements like position and body language by the performer. Moreover, the purpose of this music is trying to create an ambience that audience could enjoy without learned-musical language. Cat’s Romp II is also a commission by Prof. Hao-Yin Huang, a cat lover naturalized after her constantly playing the solo edition. The idea of the commission is to collaborate a pianist to play with her without modifying the original version. To make these two distinguished roles vividly challenges the piano into a new status. Different from the Zheng with its tuning movability, the well-tempered piano reshapes the romping cat which brought me a lot of fresh experiences while composing for it. The version performed on May 3rd is by tape (zheng) and piano. Piano, Yuan-Chen Li New Music New Haven, Yale School of Music, Sprague Hall http://www.yale.edu/music/concerts/News/07.05.03.html
