Bio
Johnny Angry is an all original rock band from San Pedro, CA. Formerly called "Pipe", it was formed in and around the summer of 2005 and played its first and only gig under that moniker at the San Pedro Fisherman's Fiesta in June of 2006. The band consists of Pete Mazich on hammond b3 organ and vocals (from Mike Watt and the Secondmen, the Madonnabees, and his own longstanding 058 (a local pedro' croatian band), John (Johnny) Aralica on vocals and guitar (from Crotech and Seven Poisons), Tony (Tone) Viducic on guitar (also from Crotech and 058), Ray (South Bay Ray) Solorio on bass and vocals (from LA Eyez fame), and Mike (The Colonel) Mandich on drums from Zrinski (another local pedro' croatian band). All the members have also been in other various bands over the years, but in order not to bore you with too many details- let's just move on. The band had been a long running idea in the minds of Pete, John and Tone for about four years prior though its initial fruition had to be postponed due to Pete"s touring commitments as part of The Secondmen with Mike Watt. When finally (in the summer of 2005) the aforementioned three got together, it was with Pete's friend and guitarist Ante Novoselic for a completely different project dubbed Lose Vino (Bad Wine)- the idea behind the band being that they would play Ex-Yu rock songs from the 70's and 80's (Bijelo Dugme, Azra, Divlje Jagode, Laufer, Crvena Jabuka). Being that all four were of Croatian heritage, it seemed at the time like something interesting to do to keep their chops up. At this point the band went thru two drummers w/ the throne ultimately being filled by Mike Mandich; well-known to the others from his playing in the pedro scene for many years. As luck would have it though, Lose Vino was decidedly short-lived -for during a break at the band's second rehearsal mike got up from behind his kit and said that his heart was not into doing cover tunes and that the band should attempt to solely do their own original music. The remainder of that rehearsal; thru jamming on various riffs and despite copious amounts of alcohol (and not a small amount of nervousness), led all the band members to recognize that there was indeed something there that they hadn't felt while playing the other material- Hence, the original idea of the "Pipe" project had come full circle. Fast forward a few months into the writing and arranging process and guitarist Ante opts to leave the band (due to his many other musical commitments) while Ray Solorio, a very close friend of Mike's- is asked to fill the bass chair (formerly manned by johnny-who now switches over to guitar), and the line up is formally solidified. Subsequent to this chain of events however, in the summer of 2006 the "Pipe"members discover that another band back in the 90's had also been called "Pipe" and had released a few albums, so out of respect it was unanimously decided not to use that name. Citing their influences and collective state of mind as inspiration, the band decided to go w/ their present moniker "Johnny Angry", which although supposedly has nothing to do with the Johnny in the band, seems to indicate (and sources close to the band can confirm this), that he is indeed one angry mother-fucker.
