Boabab got its name from the ancient mysterious tree, the Baobab, or as it is scietifically known; Adansonea Digitata. Ed Lewis (singer/songwriter)is fascinated by this tree that is both rooted in air and soil and holds the sky to the earth. The band was born in Stellenbosch by Ed and bass player Barry Steenkamp from akkedis in 2002. They have since played in Bohemia, Mystic Boer, Hidden Cellar, Dorp Street Theatre, Stellenbosch Neelsie, Indipendent Armchair, Mrecury Lounge, Live, Hectic on Hope, Jo'Burg Bar, Grahamstown Fest, Squirrels, Songwriters Club, Sidewalk Cafe and more. The sound is fresh with intelligent lyrics like nothing you've heard before yet somehow it makes you dream of home. It's been compared to bands ranging from Pixies to Violent Femmes to Blur yet the sound is so unique that it stands alone. It's definitely worth checking out if you're up for uplifting music pumped through a lot of soul and amplified with intelligent lyrics and rocking rythms. Eduard Stakesby Lewis- Lead vocalist: wirtes most of the songs, sings lead vocals and plays rhythm guitar. He studied two years at a private music school in Stellenbosch where he started the band in 2000 with lead guitarist Barry Steenkamp. Barry Steenkamp- Founded the band with Ed in 2000. He has been a professional muso for many years and has played with some notable SA bands (like Akkedis and Rikku Latti- he currently also plays bass for Valiant Swart) He also founded a succesful 90's band called Garden Variety. Phil Loggenberg- Our bass guitarist: If you can think of anything in the music industry; the chances are he has probably done it- he plays rythm, lead, base, percussion- hes done genres ranging from grunge to progressive art rock to jazz and was even a dj in house, electronica, ambience and more. Along with Ed he is the owner of MMM and is the producer for the studio/media company. (www.montana.za.com) David Georgiadis- Is Boabab's Drummer- He has been drumming for silt since1996 until 2005 when the band broke up. He played for the Jonathan Martin Band for a year after that and now plays for Boabab. His weapon of choice is his Studio Maple Pearl drumkit- which comes fully loaded with interesting accesories.
