Cohort - CONFRONTING THE MUSICAL ESTABLISHMENT Australian death metal band COHORT was formed in 1990 with influences from all types of music, they started playing thrash metal music. With many line up changes, original founding members Andrew James (BASS) & Tim Redjepi (DRUMS) decided to be a 3 piece band, bringing in Darren Cowley (GUITARS) to join the band. The music side of things were great, but the band still needed a singer. Having many singers try out for the band, they could not find the sound and front man the band was looking for. With a couple of different singers in COHORT for a short time, Paul James (brother of Andrew James) gave it a bash! He brought a lighter singing style to the band, which actually worked out well for COHORT (playing thrash metal at the time). It ALL gelled, the band was there musically and also vocally, COHORT began to write original material. In late 1990 COHORT went in to the studio to record their first demo, 'Spit Fire And Death' The band felt it did not live upto their expectations & the demo was never released. Continuing to work on their music style COHORT played many gigs in their home city. With the formation of Oz Music in 1993, they along with many other local metal, rock & grunge bands began a mini tour called the 'metal mania tour'. The tour was a success, the money made on the tour was to be put in to a Compilation CD simply called 'Metal Mania'. COHORT had the first 2 track listings on the CD! The band recorded 2 NEW songs for the compilation. After the release of 'Metal Mania' the band was hungry to record again, having the taste of a REAL recording studio. Metal Mania Compilation having very good success, made this need even bigger! In 1994 with a surge of creative writing COHORT'S music style changed. They got heavier & faster! Recording an EP at powerhouse studio in Adelaide, South Australia called 'Near Death Experience.' Delving into an even darker sound, With that old school thrash metal. The EP earned COHORT a record deal with" Warhead records". With great success, the EP peaked at number 6 on a metal chart in Canada, (FM RADIO),.The band continued to play gigs locally and were still writing material. In 1996 the COHORT was finally ready to record its first full length CD, with the 5 songs off 'Near Death Experience'. COHORT went into the studio & re- recorded all the songs off the EP and 5 new songs. The first full length album was called 'Drawn And Quartered' featuring the controversial song 'Homophobic' making national mainstream TV news across Australia, the quality of the recording (production not the music) was rough, the band used a small studio this time, but the songs shine through very strong! At this point warhead records went belly up.Even though Drawn & Quartered sold over 5000 CDs, and the band was unsigned once again. To cut a long story short COHORT split up in late 2001, after a long break COHORT are back with a NEW album called 'REFLECTIONS OF MADNESS' they went back to a professional studio this time (John Reynolds Studio) with the end result being the BEST work the band has done to date!
