Young, energetic, talented, musically skilled - an eye opener is what some describe him as, but to him it was all a gift given by God. Yohan David Durand better known as “Dr.Redz”, was Born and raised in The Nature Isle of the Caribbean “DOMINICA”, which is a small beautiful island based in the West Indies. He had a passion and love for the musical arts from a very young age and always dreamt of becoming a 'BIG TIME' keyboardist. At about the age of eight, he was given his first keyboard and started off taking piano lessons where he first discover musical notes and theory. Though he found theory to be much more of a challenge than he expected, being of a determined mind and a 'never quit ' nature, he continued on with the task at hand. By the time he was 10, young Dr. Redz had given up on the idea of becoming a " big time " keyboardist and sort after other ventures. Rap music had become very popular amongst his peers, and he began listening to artists , whom at that time were consider the hottest rappers, such as KRS-ONE, 2pac, Snoop Dogg, NaS, Jay-Z, Biggie Smalls, Dr.Dre, and the list continues. Inspired, Dr.Redz began to follow the Hip Hop genre with hopes of one day becoming a rapper himself. Learning the words of the hottest tunes out, Redz would rap these lyrics out along with the track (artist), learning how to spit like a real Mc. He would listen to all the latest cd’s and mix tapes out every day after school, and would even try to write lyrics of his own, but lack of confidence only caused these lyrics to later turn to nothing more than scrap paper tossed aside. Later down his life path, throughout his teenage years, rap producers were producing some real tight beats, which , once again, would become another aspect of music to capitivate Dr. Redz. With yet another goal in mind,he purchased his first digital software which he used on his computer, and started experimenting with the program wondering everyday how Hip Hop's greatest producers like Dr.Dre, Scott Storch & Timberland did it. It was a task! Everyday he would rush home from school and would head straight to his computer with an eagerness to gain as much knowledge about producing that he possilbly could; finishing working on unfinished projects, but they were more less projects of a rookie, quality wise. Certain people tried to bring him down by not appreciating the music he made, they always said that his beats could not compare to the top producers, but he never gave up the dream. "Believing and Achieving" was his theme towards life's challenges, and he always placed God 1st in all that he did so that he could obtain gold at whatever he set after. As the days went by, about a year later after starting in the producing field, he became more skilled at producing his own beats and started gaining respect from his peers and others outside that box. Producing beats of different genres such as : Rap, R&B, Hip Hop,Reggae, Dancehall, Zouk, Soca, and Dominica’s very own Bouyon music. "In trying to make it, you can never get there on your own", so other Dominican producers such as Ghost and Clint Henderson who was already in the game before him, became his mentors and advised him on dealing with studio matters. Any form of information that Redz could absorb he would take in completely, with intentions of getting 1 step further ahead each time. In due time, he started building his own studio where you can find him everyday where high quality beats and tight ideas were jumping out of his monitors. Recognition came along as well as more respect. In 2007 WCK Dominica’s pioneers of Bouyon music worked with Dr.Redz on there 07’ Album Entitled ONE BO$$. Dreams were being accomplished and music’s heading to another level for this young talented individual. His main aim is to make as a producer in the music industry and to one day work alongside big time producers and artist on his beats, and to have his music be recognized not only within the Caribbean Region but internationally as well.
