Bio
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The musical journey began for Laura with playful banters between herself and her grandfather on the piano. Her family soon discovered that Laura had a natural ear for music when at an early age she was found by her parents scatting along with their Ella Fitzgerald recordings, all this in perfect pitch and with extraordinary finesse. Being born into a musical family, she was soon encouraged to take up the piano, and in middle school developed her taste for the clarinet, which in later years eventually lead her to the saxophone player that we know of today. All this did not automatically take Laura into a musical career, as she was also a talented award-winning artist. It was only when she found herself on a fashion degree in Birmingham that she realized she was more passionate about her music than art. Ironically her then art lecturer ridiculed her about her desire to follow music. Well, five years later she landed a Jazz degree at the prestigious Leeds College of Music, where she was awarded the coveted Spud Murphy trophy for Saxophone (not bad considering she only started playing the sax 5 years earlier). Whilst studying, Laura was also fortunate enough to take up her childhood passion for singing, under the watchful eyes of Angela Elliot and Tina May. Laura has since been building up her exhilarating career as a saxophonist and vocalist, with a respectful and loyal fan base in both the Jazz scene and Dance clubs throughout the UK and beyond. Laura’s Jazz schedule is exceptionally busy with gigs in and around the north of England and with festivals booked well into 2007, having previously headlined with top jazz players such as Gilad Atzmon, Jim Fryer, Alan Barnes and Bruce Adams to name but a few. On top of all this, Laura recently recorded her debut jazz album (named after herself) featuring an outstanding line-up of musicians inc. Pat McCarthy (guitar), Jamil Sheriff (piano), Zoltan Dekany (bass) and Caroline Boaden (drums). So far the reviews have been terrific and the album is selling like hot cakes! As well as her reputation in the Jazz scene, she is making a big name for herself as a club saxophonist within the Dance World, being requested to play and record with some of the worlds finest DJ’s. Known and billed as ‘The Lovely Laura’(www.myspace.com/thelovelylaurafowles) - she has appeared at some of the most prestigious venues in the UK and travelled much of the world satisfying crowds of thousands with word of mouth guaranteeing news of her immense talent spreading like wildfire. Her glamorous image and stunning looks coupled with her undeniable talent have catapulted her into the forefront of the industry to become worldwide resident for one of the biggest house brands around, Hed Kandi. Not only content with her demanding jazz and club work, Laura has been busy writing original material alongside pianist, composer and arranger Wayne Pollock. They have been creating a more contemporary, soulful jazz style of their own, where you hear Laura singing like you’ve never heard her before. Feedback so far has been exceptional, especially since being featured on the ITV1 documentary “Leeds Uncovered”, where they had to perform before a live studio audience In addition to these commitments, Laura has even more musical responsibilities and recording projects. One recent album finds Laura exposing her very deep, dark and emotional side whilst being the featured vocalist with ‘The 39 Steps’ by DJ, writer and producer Kato. This album called ‘Coming Clean’ has a very original sound and style with influences from hip hop, jazz, funk and film scores - due to be finished May ‘07. Laura has also been the ever delivering saxophonist in the Guy Manning group (www.myspace.com/guymanning), gaining a respectful following and reputation within the progressive rock world. To finish off her already hectic schedule, Laura works regularly and closely with the BBC, working on program soundtrack theme songs, often appearing on television herself, playing (strangely enough) a saxophonist! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
