Born on the 19th of August 1988 in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, Mcpotar began his hip-hop career at age 13. He developed from being a regular poet, to being a rhyme master. His rhymes became more synchronized in the way they were organized in verse. He recorded his first track at Mooonlight Studios in Bulawayo, it was called “Fabulous”. However he had pressure from his parents about how he was planning to manage the industry and school at the same time. Mcpotar, was always a bright child at school growing up. When he was in forth grade he won a literary writing poetry and got a second classs certificate for prose writing before he improved to a first class certificate in poetry in the next year. He also got a literary writing award from Zimbabwe’s Ministry of Education at 6th grade. “I’ve had a story to tell ever since I can remember. I put that in rhyme and verse and it’s inspired by a lot of stuff, a lot of people and artistes as well. See, Inspiration is a treasure of endless measure, I write for pleasure but I also expect to earn treasure from it. If you really had to buy inspiration you wouldn’t afford it, Kanye West says : You can’t buy this, super flyness, in the Classic remix. He’s right and that’s why he’s been an inspiration to me as a rapper. My lyrics however do not talk about the aspects Kanye talks about, I’m Zimbabwean he’s American. It has been hard being in this industry without parental support, financial support and all. I did my first full demo album in April 2007. Boy was I lyrical, I have to compliment myself. I wasn’t able to upload it on the net because in Zimbabwe internet is expensive. It’s more of a luxury and we still use slow internet connections which will take you hours to upload an mp3. Yes there is now a little broadband but it’s frustrating, it’s slow. So what do I do. I hustle money to get on the net legitimately, I make sure I don’t sleep without money in my pockets because I might dream of something cheap and not be able to buy it even in my dreams.” It has been a hustler life for Mcpotar in trying to get radio airplay at least, trying to sign a record deal outside Zimbabwe and trying to establish his image as the best rapper in Zimbabwe and also on the African stage. He looks up to artistes like KRS ONE, Nas, Kanye West, Jay-Zee, Eminem, Dr Dre and Lupe Fiasco. “ I believe Lupe Fiasco and Kanye West basically graduated from a class of their own as far as hip-hop is concerned, their lyrics are so didactic.” He is a big fan.
