MELISSA TRINCHERE A Lunar Legacy Drawing on the quick witted irony that has endeared her to thousands of fans worldwide since her debut 2004 Les Petits Garcons EP, Melissa Trinchere describes her new 11 song confessional A Lunar Legacy as “songs that you’d want to listen to when you feel dreamy, heartbroken, misunderstood, melancholic, lovesick and self-deprecating”—in other words, cool and engaging, enigmatic but completely irresistible Piano pop for lovers of “sad bastard music.” Charting her emergence from the innocence of adolescence to the harsher realities that come with the onset of adulthood, the haunting, ethereal collection features a gathering of songs from two distinct periods of her life. Many of them are from her mid teen period in the years after she discovered the transformational power of composing and singing melodies from poems she had written. The versatile performer wrote many of the others, from the wistful and longing “Passed By” and the lyrically clever, emotionally charged “Twist(H)er” to the hopeful “I Wish” and the charmingly hypnotic pop tune “Wonderland,” earlier in her 20s as she came to terms with the past and reflected upon her newfound wisdom and sense of purpose. Growing up in a home with parents who performed in a cover band called Awesome —her mom was the singer, her dad the keyboardist—and a brother who became a record producer, Melissa was surrounded by music throughout her childhood. Carrying on the spirit and legacy of her contemporaries and major influences Fiona Apple, Tori Amos, Morrissey and The Cure, she has always had a sharp edge when it comes to exploring the darker side of the human heart. The title A Lunar Legacy comes from her astrological sign of Cancer, the moon child, the crab whose tough outer shell and inside softness she perfectly relates to. “This record stretches a bit beyond the love and desperation that have been my usual song subjects in the past,” she says, referring to the overall vibe of her debut EP as well as her subsequent four track EP Changing Tide. “These tunes go somewhere deeper inside of me and are really about the general depression I’ve experienced in my life and my ongoing struggle to break through it,” she says. “I especially lived my adolescence as a Cancer, hypersensitive and emotional and seeing life in a very dramatic way. The planetary ruler of Cancer is the Moon and the Moon is distinctly feminine. I think these songs have a very feminine vibe, and the music for the most part is very delicate even if I’m tapping at times into heavier emotions.” Sad or upbeat, down or digging her way up through it, Melissa is connecting in a big way with fans in both the U.S. and overseas, particularly in Ireland. The Southern California born and based artist has built an enthusiastic fan base in the region with her gigs at The Talking Stick café in Santa Monica, the Welcome Café in Redondo Beach and The Coffee Depot in Riverside. She’s also cultivated a strong following in County Sligo, Ireland, where she opened for the well-known Irish artist John Spillane at Barry’s Pub in Grange and the Osta Café Sessions showcase hosted by Wayne O’Connor last summer. Denise Squier of Indie-Music.com says, “Melissa Trinchere is a force to reckon with, and I will not be surprised to hear her voice on the radio soon.” While closing in on that goal in the realm of terrestrial radio, the singer has been receiving airplay at numerous internet radio stations across the U.S. Beyond increasing her schedule of live performances and reaching new audiences with the music of A Lunar Legacy, she is also excited about making her songs available for licensing to record labels, film and TV shows. “For me, there’s something truly magical about the process of writing and recording my songs,” she says. “It’s one of the only times I can say I am relaxed and know my place in the world. I had stage fright for a time before I became comfortable playing live for people, but now that’s become a very enjoyable part of my career as well. When I get onstage and feel that connection with the audience now, it’s the greatest adrenaline rush I’ve ever felt.”
