If Pink Floyd and The Smashing Pumpkins got into a fistfight on a frozen night in Minneapolis over the best use of a tremolo pedal, the musical result might be Pictures of Then. Minneapolis, MN, indie rock band Pictures of Then was formed in 2005 by vocalist/guitarist Casey Call, bassist Jacob Wittkamp, drummer Joe Call, guitarist Joe Gamble and keyboardist/percussionist James McDonald. From ripping British crunch to four part mellow vocal chaos, Pictures of Then thrives on diversity in their sound, while retaining their commercial appeal with an ever increasing catalog of powerfully relevant tunes. Drawing upon both classic and modern rock stylings, some songs present a more "stripped-down" feel while others blend thick melting vocal harmonies and echoing guitar riffs with a deep, driving rhythm section. Upon honing their sturdy sound on Call family property in humble northwest Iowa at "The Studio" -- a homemade practice space sporting a floating floor, set atop hockey pucks, filled with 3000 lbs worth of sand -- Pictures of Then packed it up and entered Jason Orris's The Terrarium Studios in Minneapolis, MN to cut their 2007 debut Crushed By Lights.
