During his early childhood years growing up in Manchester, Jamaica, Major Fresh was accustomed to seeing his family members participate in musical events at church. “I used sing around the neighborhood and take part in school concerts and people would tell me that I had a good voice and great talent,” he said. Fresh never lost sight of his long term goal to make a solid mark in music so he continued to enter concerts, where he consistently snagged the first and second placement. When he entered the Rising Star competition, which is hosted by famed singer Nadine Sutherland and Anthony Miller, airs on TVJ and is considered to be Jamaica’s version of the popular American Idol, he quickly rose through the ranks, going as far as the sixth round, when a conflict in scheduling caused him to put an end to his quest. Fresh, who has been generating interest in musical circles on the local scene, is amassing enormous airplay for his hot new single on the signs rhythm “Leggo Dat,” which elicited positive feedback from the crowd at when he performed on the show, Island Explosion, the Christmas time reggae show featuring Bounty Killer, Capleton, Beenie Man and Vybez Kartel. As the new year gets underway, Fresh is devoting a lot of time in the studio, honing his skills and putting the finishing touches on his soon-to-be released debut CD. While he acknowledged that the project has been a long time in coming, he is nonetheless pleased with the quality of his work and feel the CD is well worth the wait, especially as his fan base has grown steadily. Fresh appeared on the TV program “Hype Zone”, on Jamaica’s Hype TV recently where he treated viewers to a searing performance which illustrated the full range of his talents. “After the show I went into the studio and did “Leggo Dat,” as a message to musicians to use music to tackle problems such as crime in society,” he explained. He stated that he wants to inspire his peers to target songs for specific audiences and become musical ambassadors who make a positive difference in the world. Convinced that music has the power to heal and influence people’s behavior on various levels, Fresh is busy in the studio working on conscious music which he hopes will have the desired effect of winning him more fans while spreading his message of hope and action. “I want my music to add another flavor to worldwide debate, but at the same time give people good party music that is fun and entertaining,” he said. With his CD inching toward completion, Fresh is eyeing the possibility of performing on some of the poplar reggae shows that are usually hosted in the North American region throughout the year.
