Bio
Jamaican singer and songwriter, Ruth, cannot easily be placed into a category. Her music has been dubbed as a cross between reggae, dancehall, rock, and roots music, but she simply explains it as, “I sing what I feel, and if I hear a rhythm that appeals to me, it doesn’t matter the genre…as long as I feel it.” With her raspy, smoky, melodic voice, Ruth has been often compared to the likes of Sade; and with her unorthodox concepts, clear-cut, straightforward lyrics which she writes all on her own, she has been called by her friends, “no typical brown lady.” Born Ruth-Ann Roberta Brown in the rural community, Chesterfield, Westmoreland, on August 28, 1984, Ruth began singing at a tender age while attending church. From this age, she knew that she was born to "be a star and do big things." With her Christian parents who wanted nothing but 'the best' for her, she moved through high school producing nothing but high grades where possible. “I wrote so much poetry in class that I almost neglected the very purpose I was attending school.” In 2000, she progressed onward to Northern Caribbean University in Manchester where she studied to become a secondary school English and Literature teacher. "This only honed my song writing skills," she explains, "and it definitely broadened my thinking." After graduating with a Bachelor’s Degree in Secondary Education (magna cum laude), Ruth taught Language Arts at Belair High School in Manchester, Jamaica. With friends constantly telling her to record what she had written and to stop shying away from it, she finally decided to make a demo at a nearby studio in Mandeville. That is when she met Fabian Rodney of Di-Mon Cut Productions, who began marketing her as best as he could on the Jamaican scene. In late 2005, she released her first single, 'As It Is', a commentary on a gone-bad triangular affair, which received a reasonable amount of airplay on Jamaican radio stations, especially IRIE FM (played by Ron Muschette, Big A, Elise Kelly, Chris Supreme, DJ Wayne, DJ Shinehead) ; the medley video, shot in Tivoli Gardens, done in collaboration with Sipple Steppa (‘Concrete Jungle’) and Pahrebel (‘Rootsman’) also got some rotation on local cable stations (JUICE TV, HYPE TV, FIWI TV). Soon after, she released ‘Where I Want Him’ on the Di-Mon Cut label. “The first time I went on stage, I almost fainted. I am not sure if any sounds came out but I saw people singing along and waving their rags, so that made me go on. But when I started interacting with some members of the crowd, they said they could have sworn it was a Rasta girl who sang ‘As It Is’, not a Japanese-looking girl.” Ruth has performed on stages in St. Thomas, Kingston, Manchester, and Westmoreland. She migrated to the United States in 2006, where she began recording her music independently without any manager or producer. In 2007, Ruth & Collavanni realized they worked extremely well together & decided to join forces. Collavanni accepted the offer to become Ruth's manager. With Collavanni's music industry connections, along side Ruth's undeniable talent; these two have no end in sight. DJ's from around the world are requesting any and all of Ruth's tunes.....DJ's such as DJ Daddy Crucial in the UK to Miss Lou in France~~~Ruth is INTERNATIONALLY KNOWN. "Music is my passion. I won’t give it up… I write from my experiences. My songs are not necessarily what everyone would move to, but if they had similar experiences, they would definitely be able to relate. I write for myself first, because how can I sing something if I do not agree with it? I really want to give people something to hold on to for years...something they can connect with and feel deep down. I see myself going places, and I want my music to live on forever, even after I leave this Earth." Check me out on www.myspace.com/ruthabrown
