Bio
Freestyle or Latin Freestyle, also called Latin Hip Hop in its early years, is a form of electronic music that is heavily influenced by Hispanic culture. Performers such as, Safire, Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam, TKA, George Lamond, and Expose are direct products of this movement. Freestyle was originated as a dance in the urban scene of New York by the late 70's. It continues to be produced today and enjoys some degree of popularity, especially in urban Latino and Italian American population centers. Another popular modern genre, Florida breaks, evolved from this sound. The music first developed primarily in New York City and Miami in the mid-1980s. It eventually spread to many other cities with Hispanic populations. Initially, it was a fusion of the vocal styles found in 1970s disco music with the syncopated, synthetic instrumentation of 1980s electro, as favored by fans of breakdancing. It was also influenced by sampling, as found in hip hop music. In the 1990s, the electro and hip hop influences were supplanted by house music. Freestyle music based on house rather than electro is sometimes referred to as Freestyle-House. PLANET PATROL III The history of P.P. III started back in 1980 with a local Boston Group called the “Energetics” Who for many years prior reigned as the local Jackson five, the group members consisted of Joey Lites, Tony Borders, Calvin Shepard, the late Melvin B. Franklin, & Herbert (Pee-Wee) Jackson. Managed tutored and developed by Mr. Donald Poole Sr. as the Energetic’s the group recorded one national album on Atlantic records with then president Jerry Greenberg/ and a&r Brian Holland. Atlantic secured the production talents of the Motown Icon production team of Holland Dozier, Holland to produce the premier LP “Come Down To earth” Recorded in Las Angeles California. The project sold 50,000 plus units regionally. After which time Atlantic dropped the group. During a 2 year lapse the group scuffled to stay together under the leadership of Herb Jackson, herb was determined that the career was not over so he sought out labels and contacts in NYC, To his surprise one Friday evening herb received a phone call from Arthur Baker asking if the group would be interested in a recording contract with Arthur Bakers Shake down Productions. There was one catch! The Energetic’s would have to be willing to change there name to “Planet Patrol” a name already established through the Africabambaata & Soul Sonic Force records: “Planet Rock & Looking for the Perfect Beat! So we accepted not very easily I might add., Arthur brought us to N.Y from Boston which to me was my second home because my grandmother lived in Brooklyn (Flatbush & St Marks Ave. which was the same area Arthur live and had his pre-production studio in his Apt so I lead the group straight to his crib. After arriving we started production, and recorded play at your own risk, don’t tell, cheap thrills, and the rest was history. Because of our prior years as a local Boston group we mastered many of the legendary vocal groups sound and styles, the Jackson five, the temptations, Blue magic, and even the Osmonds. So we’ve always had the vocal group sound, Arthur just merged the vocal group style with the hip hop/ dance/ electro/ freestyle musical elements and created a whole new sound. Over the past 20 years many things have transpired one of our original members Melvin B. Franklin was murdered yet to be solved, another is handicapped due to a surgery gone bad, but as the original member and founder herb Jackson was sought out by Mr. Bill Foster of Wild –O productions for a few tour dates, and herb is a ordained minister so he initially declined but after praying on it he saw the opportunity, as a great platform to reach a greater volume of people, so now the music is the vehicle, but the mission is different, especially since Herb clinically Died from a Overdose of cocaine & LSD, The New Planet Patrol III consist of Andre Dubose, Clarence Thompson Jr, & Herbert J. Jackson, there have just completed there new CD The challenge” with there single Long Live Freestyle” with a video of the same title on there SpaceAge records Label.
