Have you ever been listening to the radio, and the same song plays over and over again? Upset that the airwaves are dominated by the same artists every year? Thirsty for someone new who could make an incredible impact on the music world? In searching for this type of artist I found myself in Marcy Projects. I asked the people who lived there "Is there someone here who could change the game?" One name came up constantly. That of Big Trip. I asked where can I find Big Trip. One youngster offered to take me to this phenom I'm hearing so much about. We enter one of the project buildings, and catch the elevator to the 4th floor. The kid knocks on the door and tells me: "You're on your own from here" and takes off. The door opens and I ask hesitantly, "Excuse me are you Big Trip?" The young man stares at me and says, "That depends. Who are you and why are you looking for him?" I explain to him who I am and my reason for being here and he replys, "Good I think its time for my name to be heard." Born March 15, 1978 as Craig Latimore, Big Trip was to say the least different. "I always felt special growing up. We never had the best of things, but it never got me down. As long as I could inhale and exhale I was good." Trip almost didn't have that chance, born with a hole in his heart, he was not allowed to leave the hospital. "Through the graces of god, I pulled through. I guess he had something planned for me." Always the bright child, he was reading at a 8th grade level in the 3rd grade. This gave way to a mastery of the english language. "All my life I had a way with words. The kids in class would pay me to write stories they could take credit for. I guess I was hustling since way back then." At the age of 8, Big Trip began to write rap songs. Not only for himself, but for others. At the age of 10, Trip's life changed. His father was murdered in a bad drug deal. "He was hooked on it, and he tried to sell it. He tried to shoot the guy, but his aim wasn't too good. I never knew much about my father, but that broke my heart. I don't think I've been the same since. I lost alot that day, that pretty much explains my guidance issues." His mother and grandmother raised him to the best of their ability. "They did a great job. Me straying had nothing to do with them. It had everything to do with me though." His attitude changed. School was secondary. Something had to right the ship. " My Aunt Bertha McGowan, pulled me to the side and told me reguardless of my downfalls, my family loves me and God loves me. She was the first person in my family I remember to admit they loved me. I had to get it together." His hard times gave birth to a new vigor for his music. "I touched all topics. I had my game face on since then. I have a lot to talk about now. His songs run the gamut of emotion. From party records like "That's Me" and "Happy 2 Be". To life stories like "Unhealed Scars" and "Turn The Clock Back", Trip paints pictures beautifully. As I exit I thank Trip for talking to me, and promise him his that his story and voice will be heard. The door slams behind me and I pop up from my bed. Damn.......a dream???? It all seemed so real. As I leave for work I grab my car keys and a CD fall s to the ground. Same face. I play it, same music. Damn, same feeling. He's incredible, I say to myself. The game of hip hop is in for a change. Change's name is BIG TRIP!! Stay tuned you won’t want to miss a thing.
